The high road to Taos from Santa Fe is both scenic and culturally enlightening. It passes through several small communities where rustic old buildings and classic missions still stand. It is the slow route - don't take this road if you have a deadline to meet.

The photographs in this photo tour were taken in early summer of 2006 and late winter of 2007. They highlight the historical buildings and scenic splendor of the High Road to Taos. Related links for the High Road to Taos are listed near the bottom of this page.

"Sacred Heart Church"
Nambe, New Mexico

Although this mission-style church is not all that old compared to many of New Mexico's old missions, dating back to the 1940's, it stands as an impressive site in Nambe, at the start of the High Road to Taos.

"The Mission at Chimayo"
Chimayo, New Mexico

The Santuario de Chimayo Mission has been called " The Lourdes of America." It is visited by thousands of believers each year, seeking the so-called healing powers of the dirt found in the sanctuary.

"Truchas Landscape"
Truchas, New Mexico

A dilapidated barn near the roadside adds just the right touch of antiquity to the approach to the quaint old town of Truchas where many artists have now established their studios.

"San Jose Mission"
Las Trampas, New Mexico

There's not much else in Las Trampas, but this old mission church, which dates back to the 18th century, stands as a monument to the town's history.
